WebThe SBP was designed to provide basic financial support when an active duty service member or retired veteran predeceases their spouse. The cost of SBP is the same for everyone—6.5% of the pension, deducted automatically from their retirement pay. The SBP beneficiary receives payment only upon the death of the insured veteran.
