WebHistory. The church was built to serve the ecclesiastical parish of Bitterne, which had been created in the early 1850s out of the existing parish of St James, West End. Consecrated in September 1853, initially the church consisted of chancel, nave, north aisle and an attached tower with steeple; the south aisle was added in the 1880s.
